Crash Team Racing was the first racing game to feature Crash Bandicoot, released on the Playstation in 1999. Crash Team Racing became a 'Greatest Hits' title in 2000 in the US, a 'Playstation, The Best' title in 2000 in Japan and a 'Platinum' title in Europe and the overall PAL region late 2000. For the Japanese localisation, the game was renamed 'Crash Bandicoot Racing'. This was the last Crash game to be made by Naughty Dog.

[edit] Story
Crash and his friends are preparing to enter a kart racing tournament. Unfortunately, an extraterrestrial named Nitros Oxide sees this, and travels to Earth to compete. He claims to be the fastest racer in the Galaxy, who travels the stars looking for creatures to test his skill. Then, Oxide challenges them to a race that he calls "Survival of the fastest" and explains the rules: Oxide races against the best racer on Earth. If Earth's driver wins, Oxide promises to leave Earth alone. But if Oxide wins, he promises to turn the entire globe into a concrete parking lot, and make Earth's inhabitants his slaves forever.
[edit] Game Play Modes
[edit] CTR Adventure
CTR Adventure is the single player portion of the game. Using their chosen character, players must race through all events and win to unlock the final event against Nitros Oxide. Players can earn a variety of awards to unlock new content for racing, and show off their times to friends.
The different awards are:
- Racing Trophies
Trophies are obtained by finishing in first place in a trophy race. Collect all four trophies in each area to open up the boss for that area. After gaining a trophy from one race, another one will open (with exception of starting with two open when you first enter an area).
- Boss Keys
Boss races are unlocked after obtaining all four trophies for the area. Boss keys are obtained by beating the final boss of each area. The player may only gain access to the next area after beating the previous area's boss. In order to race Nitros Oxide, the player must have beaten all four bosses (Ripper Roo, Papu Papu, Komodo Joe, Pinstripe Potoroo) and gotten their keys as a result.
- Relics
Relic races are unlocked after beating the area boss. Relics are obtained by scoring the lowest elapsed time in a solo relic race by smashing Time Crates. These Time Crates freeze the clock for the amount of seconds shown on the box (1, 2, or 3 seconds). If the player manages to break all the Time Crates, a "Perfect" bonus is awarded, which decreases the final time by ten seconds.
There are three types of relic: Sapphire, Gold, and Platinum. Sapphire is the easiest to obtain, through to Platinum which is the hardest, fastest, and lowest time.
After earning all 18 relics, the player can then face Nitros Oxide (again), and unlock N. Tropy.
For a list of times to beat for each relic, scroll down to the "World Map and Race Tracks" section.
- CTR tokens
Token races are unlocked after beating the area boss. Tokens are obtained by finishing in first place in a token race, much like a trophy race. However this time the player must also collect the three letters 'C', 'T' and 'R'. The letters are often hidden away, or in hard to get to places, or in places unfavourable for winning the race (or a combination of all three). There is a total of 20 Tokens to collect: 16 are obtained by Token races; the final 4 (purple ones) are awarded for beating the crystal Bonus Rounds.
Note: If the player does not collect all three tokens, and come in first place, the token is not awarded.
- Gems
Gem Cups are unlocked after winning four CTR Tokens of the same colour. Their warp vortexes can be found in Gem Stone Valley. After successfully winning a Gem Cup, played in an arcade-style tournament of the four races the CTR tokens were played on, with exception of purple, the player wins a Gem and unlocks a character, corresponding to the Gem colour:
- Red unlocks Ripper Roo,
- Green unlocks Papu Papu,
- Blue unlocks Komodo Joe,
- Yellow unlocks Pinstripe Potoroo,
- Purple unlocks Fake Crash.
Purple Gem Cups are played on each of the bosses' home tracks (Roo's Tubes, Papu's Pyramid, Dragon Mines, Hot Air Skyway) and against the four bosses too.
Note: It is possible to have a save with 101% or 102% completion, without cheating. This is where the player has successfully completed Adventure Mode, with relics at least gold (101%) or all relics platinum (102%).
[edit] Time Trial
Time Trials are a single player game where you race against the clock to get the best time.
[edit] Arcade
Allows the player to quickly race on a selection of tracks against a selection of opponents. Players can race on a single track or select 'CUP' in which players race over four tracks for the highest total score. Two players can complete in this mode against computer controlled opponents and the difficulty can be set to Easy, Medium or Hard.
[edit] Vs
Up to four players complete on a chosen track or across four tracks for points. There are no computer controlled racers on Vs.
[edit] Battle
Up to four players compete in a 'battle arena' against each other, armed with the weapons found within the game. Players can compete in teams or have a 'free for all'. There are no computer controlled racers on Battle.

[edit] Weapons and Power-ups
Weapons in CTR can be gained by smashing a ? wooden crate found on the race track and Battle Arenas. Some weapons (such as the Missile and the Bowling Bomb) come as single use or in groups of three (however, this effect is random). Weapons are activated by pressing 'O' on the PSone controller. By picking up 10 'Wumpa Fruits', players are able to 'Juice Up' the weapon in their possession. This improves the weapon in some way, either by increasing its effectiveness or durability. 'Wumpa Fruits' can be obtained by smashing plain wooden crates, or by collecting single fruits, found on the race track and Battle Arenas. Wumpa Fruits are lost if the player is hit by a weapon, or if they fall into a chasm or out of bounds.
The weapons found in CTR are as follows:
Tracking Missiles: Locks onto the closest driver in front of the player.
Juiced Up: causes the missile to travel faster and track better.
Other notes: Missiles can come in threes. If the player is very skilful, they can power-slide a 180 turn, and fire the missile - it will then target the racer behind.
Bowling Bombs: Rolls a bomb. They may 'track' the target though not to the extent of Tracking Missiles.
Juiced Up: causes the bomb have improved 'tracking' and to explode with a larger blast radius.
Other notes: Bombs can come in threes. Bombs may also be rolled backwards by pressing 'O' whilst holding 'down' on the d-pad or analogue stick. Bombs may be manually detonated by the sender by pressing the 'O' button at any time after one is released.
Power Shields: A green shield protects the player from one weapon or obstacle for a few seconds.
Juiced Up: causes the shield to become blue in colour, it lasts indefinitely until the player is hit by a weapon or obstacle.
Other notes: The player can choose to fire the shield like a bomb by pressing 'O' on the PS1 controller.
Explosive Crates: Releases a TNT crate behind the player. If a player runs over the crate, it lands on their head and detonates after a short countdown.
Juiced Up: turns the crate into a 'NITRO' crate, which explodes as soon as a player hits it.
Other notes: A TNT crate can be thrown off by repeatedly hopping (pressing 'L1' or 'R1' on the PSone controller).
N. Brio's Beakers: Releases a green vial behind the player. The vial spins out a racer that hits it.
Juiced Up: causes the vial to turn red and after touching the vial, the player spins out then is slowed down by a raining cloud overhead for a few seconds. During this time, the affected player's weapon (if any), is re-randomly selected.
Other notes: Vials may also be thrown in front of the player by pressing 'O' whilst holding 'up' on the d-pad or analogue stick.
Aku Aku/Uka Uka Masks: Gives the player protection from all weapons and obstacles for a number of seconds.
Juiced Up: increases the time Aku Aku/Uka Uka remains to protect the player.
Other notes: Aku Aku protects the 'good' characters of the Crash Bandicoot universe (Crash, Coco, Pura, Polar and Penta) while Uka Uka protects the 'evil' characters of the Crash Bandicoot universe (N. Tropy, Neo Cortex, N. Gin, Ripper Roo, Papu Papu, Tiny Tiger, Fake Crash, Komodo Joe, Pinstripe Potoroo, Dingodile and Nitros Oxide.)
N.Tropy Clock: Sets off N.Tropy's clock and every kart on the race track (bar the player that set off the clock) spins out of control and then experiences reduced speed for a few seconds.
Juiced Up: causes the speed reduction to last longer.
Other notes: Players are not affected if they are protected by a Power Shield or are using an Aku Aku/Uka Uka Mask.
Warp Orbs: These orbs track the player that is in first place, causing them to flip out. The orb may hit other racers along the way.
Juiced Up: causes the orbs to hit all racers between the player that sets off the orb and the player in first place.
Other notes: If a player fires the orb when in first place, or when all other racers in front have finished, the orb will just wipe out without doing anything.
Super Engine*: Constant turbo speed boost for a few seconds.
Juiced Up: increases the amount of time Super Engine stays in effect.
Invisibility*: The player cannot be seen by other players, missiles do not track them.
Juiced Up: increases the amount of time Invisibility stays in effect.
Other notes: The sparks, power-slides, and wheel markings of an invisible player can still be seen.
* Battle Mode only
[edit] Other Information
- Oxide Station cannot be selected for anything outside a single player race.
[edit] Trivia
- The entire game is about Oxide's game, which he calls 'Survival of the fastest', which is a pun of Darwin's saying survival of the fittest.
- All of the character's designs are from Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped (Except for Tiny, Komodo Joe&, who's designs are from Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back), Ripper Roo, Papu Papu and Pinstripe (who's designs are from Crash Bandicoot).
- Citadel City is actually the Cortex Castle, which contains stain glass portraits of the original bosses from the series, Cortex's Airship, Pinstripes toxic waste dump, and a lazer that resembles the Evolvo Ray.
