The Evolvo-Ray[1], also initially spelled Evolv-O-Ray[2][3] is a machine built by Dr. Neo Cortex and N. Brio to evolve ordinary animals into super-sapient beings. Because the Wumpa Islands are located off the coast of Australia, most of its subjects are animals native to that region.

Overview[]

Crash Bandicoot[]

The Evolvo-Ray first appeared in Crash Bandicoot. It was built by N. Brio, although Cortex claims credit for it. It was used to mutate Ripper Roo, Koala Kong, Pinstripe Potoroo, Komodo Joe & Moe, Tiny Tiger, Tawna Bandicoot, and Crash Bandicoot.

Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back[]

The Evolvo-Ray is not seen, but mentioned once by Cortex, who admits that N. Brio invented it.

Crash Bash[]

Cortex is seen in his lab near the Evolvo-Ray in the opening cutscene.

Crash Twinsanity[]

The Evolvo-Ray did not appear again until Crash Twinsanity, though only as a prototype version in the past. Cortex had been trying to make it as a child (before Brio successfully made it). Cortex's two test subjects were his parrots: Victor and Moritz. However, instead of evolving them, it sent them to the Tenth Dimension.

Crash of the Titans[]

The new, mojo-fueled Evolvo-Ray had a major appearance in this game. It was used to give Uka Uka a body which was later destroyed by Crash. The handheld ray gun version of the Evolvo-Ray,  powered by mojo, was able to mutate the animals of Wumpa Island into ferocious titans and make them obey Cortex, N. Gin, Nina, Tiny, and Uka Uka. The game's intro cutscene also depicts Crash's creation with a handheld gun that presumably represents the Evolvo-Ray.

Crash: Mind Over Mutant[]

The Evolvo-Ray was mentioned by Doctor Nitrus Brio, who claimed to be the true inventor of the device and other inventions used by Cortex. However, it made no physical appearance in the game.

Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy[]

The Evolvo-Ray reappears in the N. Sane remakes of Crash Bandicoot and Cortex Strikes Back.

Crash Bandicoot: On the Run![]

The Evolvo-Ray is mentioned by name in the descriptions of the Ripper Roo and Pinstripe skins.
