From Bandipedia, the Crash Bandicoot wiki
This crate is by far one of the most dangerous crates, even though destroying it is required to get all the crates in the level.[1] Most methods of attacking it will make Crash Bandicoot end up dead but by jumping on it it will count down from three to one before exploding giving a chance to escape. In the Ripper Roo boss battle in Crash Bandicoot 2 these crates will count down from six to one before exploding. In Japan, this crate has a bomb symbol instead of the "TNT".
